Why 93 is an inland fuel

At altitude an engine needs less octane, so the Highveld has long run on 93 while the coast fills up with 95. From Wednesday 7 October Gauteng pays R29.88 for 93, +R3.12 on September.

The schedule still lists a 93 price for coastal zones – R29.01 in zone 1A – but the Fuels Industry Association’s coastal table only carries 95, which matches what coastal forecourts mostly sell.

The octane differential

The gap between 93 and 95 is not fixed. Under the basic fuel price working rules it is reviewed on the first Wednesday of each quarter, which is why the October 2026 statement announced different increases for the two grades (312 c/l for 93 against 333 c/l for 95).

Today the inland spread is 37 c/l. On a 50-litre tank that is R18.50, provided the owner’s manual allows 93.

Questions people ask

What is the 93 petrol price today?
R29.88 a litre in Gauteng from Wednesday 7 October.
Can I use 93 instead of 95?
Only if the vehicle manufacturer allows it. Many inland cars are specified for 93; turbocharged and high-compression engines often need 95.
Why did 93 and 95 change by different amounts?
Because the octane differential between the grades was reset at the start of the quarter, as the DMPR statement explains.
