Why your diesel price differs from ours
Diesel is the one transport fuel without a regulated pump price in South Africa. The department fixes the wholesale price per zone – R32.80 for 50ppm in Gauteng from Wednesday 7 October – and each forecourt adds its own retail margin. Engen, Shell, Sasol, Astron Energy and the independents therefore show different diesel prices on the same street.
The wholesale figure is still the best reference: when it moves by 324.38 c/l, as it did this month, pump prices follow within a day or two.
50ppm versus 500ppm
The number refers to sulphur: 50 parts per million (0.005%) for modern engines, 500ppm (0.05%) for older vehicles, generators and farm equipment. This month 50ppm carries a premium of 84.4 c/l over 500ppm inland.
Wholesale 50ppm diesel was above the Gauteng 95 pump price in 6 of the 10 adjustments of 2026; in October 2026 it is 254.89 c/l above it, before any retail margin.
