Zone 9C fuel price: R30.25 for 95

Johannesburg sets the tone for zone 9C: 95 unleaded at R30.25 a litre starting Wednesday 7 October, 93 at R29.88.

Zone 9C is the inland reference, the price newspapers quote as “Gauteng”. It sits 87 c/l above the coast for 95 and is number 24 of 54 zones from the cheapest: Gauteng is fed in bulk by the pipeline from Durban, while many smaller inland towns depend on longer road deliveries.

Towns billed at this zone include Johannesburg, Pretoria, Rustenburg, Alberton and 47 more – 51 districts in all, mostly in Gauteng, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga.

Fill up in Mkobola (zone 10C, ~16 km) and 95 is 21 c/l dearer.

For diesel the state fixes the wholesale price only – R32.80 a litre for 50ppm here – so retail diesel varies from site to site.

A 50-litre tank of 95 from empty costs R1,512.50, R166.50 more than under the previous schedule.
